Butterflies is a biomimicry study of butterfly movement. The project was created with the aim of investigating the possibility of replicating organic motion, such as a flap of a butterfly, with mechatronics. As of this point in the, the units has no effect on one another but perhaps in future iterations a sensor and some meaningful way of data transfer will be added to the design.
The units consist of custom 3D printed parts mounted onto steel rods. Each wing is actuated by its own high torque servo motor which allows the wings to move independently. The wings are made from two types of foil. On the outside the wing is silver colored and on the inside it has a glow-in-the-dark foil. When the butterfly closes its wings, a UV-LED stip charges the glow-in-the-dark foil, allowing the wings to emit a glowing light even after dark.
